Why

Learning objectives

The Geoinformatics engineering Master aims at preparing technicians who possess  deep preparation and strong attitude to solve problems relevant to spatial information, with a special concern on geo-referenced environmental data. Therefore, their competences are interdisciplinary and range from Environmental to Computer Science Engineering. More precisely, they will acquire the following skills, both on the methodological and practical point of views.

  • Spatial information managing:
  • acquisition and georeferencing,
  • analysis, classification and processing,
  • archiving, representation, publication and distribution.
  • Computer infrastructures, needed to manage these data in the framework of the digitalization and automation of public and private sectors, even by Internet and Web technologies.
  • Methodologies and instruments to model and analyze environmental phenomena.
  • Advanced technologies for Big Geodata and internet of Places.

Geoinformatics engineers are able to propose original solutions to manage and process spatial information and proficiently interact with multidisciplinary groups of experts in Environmental and Computer Science fields. The study program is fully offered in English, accordingly to internationalization process of Politecnico di Milano.

Knowledge and comprehension

The Geoinformatics Engineering Master poses the basis on the fundamental knowledge, both in Environmental and Computer Science, that have been acquired at the Bachelor level and proposes new highly specialized topics relevant to Geoinformatics.

The Geoinformatics Engineer’s knowledge spans the general management of spatial information, with a particular attention to geo-referred environmental data; from a Computer Science side, he is able to analyze, design and implement solutions to complex geospatial problems.

The acquisition of these capabilities requires the knowledge of all the methodological and practical topics that allow to identify, model, and solve the typical Geoinformatics problems. The evaluation of the knowledge is a continuous process during each course, that starts during classwork and laboratories and ends with the final exam.

Capability to apply knowledge and comprehension

At the end of their Master’s degree, students will have a wide knowledge of methods representing the state of the art of Geoinformatics disciplines. Moreover, they will gain not only the knowledge but also the habit to autonomously and creatively face and solve Geoinformatics problems, which are often unusual and new. Indeed, a main aim of the Master is to make students able to autonomously face cutting edge and original subjects, with a pro-active attitude to problem solution.

The Geoinformatics Engineer solves, at a level that is both methodological and practical, problems related to acquisition, georeferencing, analysis, classification, processing, archiving, representation, publication and distribution of spatial information. This ability continuously requires the application of the knowledge and is achieved through laboratories and projects that are proposed to the students together with traditional courses lectures. The acquired capabilities are verified through the discussion of individual reports relevant to laboratory and projects activities.

At the end of the study program, the thesis enhances further the capability to apply knowledge and comprehension: indeed the student must face a specific problem and is stimulated to find original solutions. The quality of this work is evaluated during the public dissertation and defense of the thesis.
